Breast Cancer Reconstruction
Approximately 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer over their lifetime.
The approach to breast cancer treatment is multi-disciplinary, involving many specialists during the course of diagnosis and treatment. Depending on the cancer and plans of your surgeon, you may benefit from a consultation with a Plastic Surgeon to discuss your options for reconstruction.
For some patients, depending on many factors including the size of the cancer, location and the size of your breasts – an Oncoplastic Breast Reduction may be an option for you. In one surgery the cancer is removed and a Breast Reduction is performed incorporating the already resected area as part of the pattern for a breast reduction. This is often followed by radiation to that breast.
Most of the patients meeting with a Plastic Surgeon who have a diagnosis of Breast Cancer are there to talk about Breast Reconstruction after a Mastectomy. The most common method used in the United States is what is called “Implant-Based” Breast Reconstruction. This utilizes the advancements in Breast Implants, Tissue Expanders, and other technologies to ultimately reconstruct the breast. How exactly this is done varies from patient to patient, although the general concept is that the breast tissue that is removed is ultimately replaced with a Breast Implant (the same kind of breast implants used during cosmetic surgeries).
During your consultation, Dr. Jones will create with you a personalized plan and go over any questions you may have about the process.
An integral part of breast cancer treatment involves the removal of the breast cancer through a lumpectomy or mastectomy, and I am excited to be able to work closely with Dr. Whitney Huddleston! She is a General Surgeon who trained at UT Southwestern in Dallas and has a component of her practice dedicated to Breast Surgery here in Longview. We work closely to coordinate the care for our patients, going over options and plans, and work side by side in the operating room!
